Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee shine in this film version of Lorraine Hansberry's play about an inner-city black family. Poitier plays Walter Lee Younger, a chauffeur with a wife (Dee) and family to support. WHen a financial windfall puts Younger's dream of starting his own business within reach the family is plunged into conflict with one another and with the intolerant world around them.

Town Selectmen to Vote on new Library Board members


The Board of Selectmen for the town of Thomaston will meet on Monday, January 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. On their agenda for this meeting is consideration of two new members of the Thomaston Library Board of Trustees, Mr. Ronald Gamage and Mrs. Kay Sylvester, both of Thomaston.

We encourage you to attend the selectmen meeting to greet and question the two potential board members. The meeting will be held at Watts Hall, next to the town offices, and is open to the public.

Friday Night Film Cancelled Feb. 20th 2009

Due to inclement weather, the Friends of the Library have elected to cancel their showing of "In the Heat of the Night" for Friday, February 20th.

Please join us next Friday, February 28th, for a showing of "A Raisin in the Sun", starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.

On Monday, March 16th, the Thomaston Library will host a resume writing workshop featuring Susan Barnard of the Rockland branch of the Maine Career Center. She will lead a three hour workshop in the drafting, preparation, and proof reading of Resumes as well as Cover Letters.

This event is free of charge, but we do ask that interested persons register by e-mailing Brian Sylvester at headlibrarian@thomaston.lib.me.us, by calling the library at 354-2453, or by signing the sign up sheet on the main floor of the library.

Friday Night Film Series

Driving Miss Daisy

This four-time academy award-winning story about a genteel but strong-willed southern matron, Daisy Wethan (Jessica Tandy) and her chauffeur Hoke (Morgan Freeman) is based on Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize winning play. It's a contest of wills as they learn that for two people so different, they have much in common - the bumpy road they travel ultimately leads to the friendship of a lifetime.

Admission is free and popcorn will be served. The doors and the bookstore will open at 6:00 p.m. Donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, call the Thomaston Library at 354-2453.

The Thomaston Public Library will be closed on Monday, February 16th, in observance of President's Day. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, February 17th.

Dance at the Thomaston Library!

5Rythms Dance for Children and Parents

Join Anna Abaldo (seen here with her family) at the Thomaston Children's Library as she leads parents and kids in 5Rythms, a meditative dance style which blends indigenous tribal music and dance with eastern spiritualism.  A light snack will be served and there is no fee for admission.

Friends of the Thomaston Library meeting

The Friends of the Thomaston Library will hold their next meeting on Monday, February 23rd.  The meeting was pushed back to the third Monday of the month, as Friends president Davene Fahy is unavailable until then. 

During the meeting the Friends will discuss their finances, the 211 Bookshop, and vote on whether or not to fund upcoming library programs and projects.  All are invited to attend.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of the Thomaston library, send an e-mail to either Davene Fahy (cdfahy@gmail.com) or Brian Sylvester (headlibrarian@thomaston.lib.me.us).  The Friends of the Thomaston Library are a 501c3 Non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness of the Thomaston Library.

Town Meeting, February 10

The Town of Thomaston will hold a special town meeting to vote on the TIF district proposal.  The special meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Watts Hall.

Directly before the vote will be an hour long public hearing on the TIF proposal, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Any town resident may bring questions about the proposal and ask the town selectmen directly.

The TIF (Tax Increment Finance) district proposal is to reclassify the Thomaston Green (the former Maine State Prison site) and other parts of the town as a TIF District, which will meaning making improvements to the area with the assumption that tax revenue generated from stores and retailers which build there will be retroactively used to pay for the improvements.

To Kill a Mockingbird
Friday, February 6th

The movie is set in a small Alabama town during the Depression.  This adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck), a lawyer who defends an innocent black man (Brock Peters) against rape charges, but winds up in a fury of hate and prejudice.  Finch's children, Jem and Scout (Phillip Alford and Mary Badhman) soon learn lessons about race, justice, and the pain of growing up.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the 211 Bookshop will be open before the film showing.  All Friday night films are free admission and open to the public.  Call the library at 354-2453.  Refreshments will be served and donations are gratefully accepted.
