Fiddler on the Roof

Filmed on location in Eastern europe, this beloved musical based on Sholem Aleichem's stories was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three. Director norman Jewison chronicles the trials of Jewish peasant Tevye the milkman (Israeli actor Topol), humble father of three strong-willed daughters and husband to oft-objecting wife, Golde (Norma Crane) in pre-revolutionary Russia. Violinist Isaac Stern provides the haunting music of the fiddler.

Friday night films are presented free of charge but donations are always welcome. The Thomaston Academy Building is handicapped accessable from the rear entrance. Light refreshments will be served. For more information call 354-2453.

Cabaret

Thomaston Academy, Room 208

A British scribe (Micheal York) and his comrades -- including a flamboyant American nightclub entertainter named Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) -- chronicle the debauchery and turbulence of prewar Berlin in director Bob Fosse's musical adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's Berlin stories. Existing in a morally ambiguous void, the characters doggedly maintain their facades as the world outside the cabaret gears for war.

Friday night films are shown free of charge and light refreshments will be served. Donations are gratefully accepted and the Thomaston Academy Building is handicapped accessable from the parking lot entrance. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.

Library Closing: Monday, January 17th


The Thomaston Public Library and Hallway Bookstore will be closed on Monday, January 17th, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. No items will be due on this day and regular hours will resume on Tuesday, January 18th.

RSU 13 Superintendant Dr. Judy Lucarelli will be the guest reader at this month's installment of the Thomaston Family Story Hour. Dr. Lucarelli will be reading new and classic picture books to families of all ages from 6 to 7 PM in the children's library.


Next month's reader will be Thomaston Postmaster Melvaney Dinsmore Jr. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor combine their talents in one of the greatest big-screen musicals ever made, a two-time Oscar nominee that includes the songs "Good Morning", "Make 'Em Laugh", and the iconic title tune. When Hollywood attempts the transition from silent films to talkies, a matinee idol (Kelly) hopes to make the cut. But he's hampered by a silent-movie queen (Jean Hagen) witha voice like fingernails on a blackboard.

Leslie Caron stars as Gigi, an avant-garde French waif being groomed as the fille de joie of affluent and handsome Gaston (Louis Jourdan). Soon Gigi metamorphoses into a stunning beauty, and the head-over-heels Gaston asks for her hand. But Gigi's courtesan grandmother is aghast: No one in the family has ever considered something as plebian as matrimony. This 1958 film won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director (Vincente Minnelli).
