The 4th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Food Drive

Diane Smith, organizer of this annual event, has announced the sponsors, dates and collection points for this year's food drive.

In order to replenish the depleted supplies of our local food bank, the following organizations have gathered together to encourage their memberships to help to re-stock the food bank: the Thomaston and Cushing Public Libraries, The Thomaston and Cushing Historical Societies, the General Henry Knox Museum, the Thomaston Monday Morning Meeting and Organizing for America.

Now that the holidays are over, it is important to remember that those in need continue to make use of such valuable resources as our food bank. Since our economy is suffering, more folks than usual need to make use of this resource, making it more important than ever to keep the food bank stocked.

All non-perishable food items are welcome. In addition, some may find it easier to make a cash donation to their particular organization with the memo indicating the money is to go to this food collection. Such donations can be used to purchase other needed items such as personal care and household supplies.

The collection points for this event are the Thomaston Public Library, the Cushing Public Library, and the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Thomaston.

Patrick nolan Guyerr, Chief Statistician witht he American Human Development Project, has been with the Project since 2009 and has also worked as a consultant to UNICEF. Patrick's first major publication with the Project was The Measure of America 2010-2011: Mapping Risks and Resilience, published last year by New York University Press. He is a graduate of GVHS and went on to earn a BA in political science from McGill University in Montreal and an MA in international affairs from the New School University in New York.

Jim Nichols was born in Brunswick, raised in Freeport and now lives in Warren with his wife, Anne. He has published work in numerous magazines, including Esquire, Portland Monthly, Zoetrope All-Story Extra, Night Train, Paris Transcontinental, Narrative and The Clackamas Review. He is a past winner of the Willamette Fiction Prize and has received an Independent Artists Fellowship from the Maine Arts Commission. His collection Slow Monkeys and Other Stories was published in 2003 by Carnegie Mellon Press, and Hull Creek, a novel of the Maine coast, was published this April by Down East Books.

Colin Page does the majority of his work outside, working from life to capture the light and atmosphere of his subject matter. "Through painting, I share unexpected moments of beauty that I find in the space around me. Painting is how I share the poetry of experience." Page studied painting at Rhode Island School of Design and Cooper Union, receiving his BFA in 2000. He recently had a solo show at the Dowling Walsh Gallery in Rockland, ME and has also participated in numerous group shows internationally. For several years Page has been living in Maine focusing on painting the landscape.

Carolyn Locke

Carolyn Locke, a teacher at Mount View High School, is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program at Goddard College. She has participated in two study tours to China, a Fulbright Hays Seminar in Morocco, and two Fulbright projects in Japan. Her work has appeared in several publications and has twice been recognized in the MWPA Poetry Competition. her program will explore the contrasts between rural and urban China in a slide show taken during the summer of 2007 combined with a reading of original poems written in the months following that summer.

Chuck Paine

Chuck has been one of the world's most famous yacht designers, active from 1971 through 2008 and a highly recognized author of many non-fiction articles on yachts. Chuck specialized in the high-end of the market designs, which included custom yachts, both sail and power, and semi-production yachts. He has had over 1,000 yachts built to his designs. His website, www.chuckpaine.com, is the most popular yacht design website in the English-speaking world. Chuck will present his book My Yacht Designs.

Currently her works are represented by the Watson Gallery in Stonington, Maine.

Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift) is called in to assess her mental state, and at Mrs. Venable's urging, perform a lobotomy on Catherine . . .

The staff and trustees will be attending the dedication of the Elias Adams and Lougee Family Library, at 4 PM in the Cole House next door to the museum. The museum is also unveiling the new Henry Knox Papers Database, a new research tool for historians of Gen. Knox and the history of Thomaston.

1960s Paris is the backdrop for Francois Dupeyron's heartwarming drama about Momo (Pierre Boulanger) , a teenage boy who lives in a working-class neighborhood and has very few friends--save for the kindly local prostitutes who adore him. Eventually, Momo finds a father figure in the older and wiser shopkeeper, Ibrahim (Omar Sharif), who takes him on a journey of self-discovery that will change both of their lives. A beautiful testament to the power of love.

National Library Week: Luthera Dawson Archive

In celebration of National Library Week, the Thomaston library is pleased to announce the donation of Luthera Dawson's archives. Luthera Dawson, a long-time library volunteer and former trustee, has written three books and has long studied Thomaston's rich history. Please join us on Friday, April 15th, for an overview of this donation and the plans for its display in the library. The Friends of the Thomaston Public Library will be serving tea and refreshments. We are swapping our Wednesday and Friday hours, to accomodate the Friends of the Library's popular Friday Night Film Series - starting in April, guests at the film series will also be able to use the library and visit the Hallway Bookstore.

Moving the Mountain

"Moving the mountain" chronicles the demonstrations of students in Tianamen Square on the fourth of June, 1989. The demonstration was crushed by the military and resulted in many deaths. The documentary is told from the point of view of the students, as seen through a forum held in the United States in 1995.

In 1979, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern was invited to perform concerts in China and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music - - an extraordinary cultural exchange chronicled in this classic documentary.

Luise Rainer took home her second consecutive Best Actress Oscar for her heartfelt portrayal of O-Lan, the long-suffering spouse of Chinese dirt farmer Wang Lung (Paul Muni) in this film based on Pearl S. Buck's epic tome. The lyrical tale chronicles the couple's changing fortunes as they survive famine and revolution, only to be tested again by avarice, lust, and Mother Nature. Karl Freunk picked up an Academy Award for his cinematography.

Alert: False emails from TPL

It has come to the staff's attention that a computer virus or spamming agent has found a way to send email using the library's email address. These emails do not originate from the library staff or any library users - they are the result of a computer outside of the library's control.

This type of email scam is called "email spoofing".

If you have recieved an email from the address 'TPL(at)thomaston.lib.me.us' with an unusual subject line (previous examples follow the pattern of "i hope to get to know u") or an email asking you to click on a link, delete it immediately and DO NOT open the link.

There is very little that can be done to prevent these phony emails, as the computer that is sending them is not part of the library's computer network. Please be aware of the risk and make sure to use up to date antivirus and antimalware software on your home computers.

New!: Craft and Homework Area

This new set of table and chairs and shelves was installed in the Children's Room to create a space for children to work on projects, play games, use school issued laptops or do other projects. The shelves above the table will be a showcase for child-made artwork and projects made at the Thomaston Library, as part of the Community Displays project. The sturdy table and shelves were built and installed by local contractor David Hynd.

Funding for this project was generously provided by the Davis Family Foundation and the Friends of the Thomaston Public Library. We hope you and your family will stop by soon to try out the new space!

Existing in a morally ambiguous void, the characters doggedly maintain their facades as the world outside the cabaret gears for war.

He claims his name is Kris Kringle and soon fills everyone with the Christmas spirit - except for his boss, Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) who is raising her daughter (Natalie Wood) to not believe in Santa. But, when Kringle is accused by the department store's crazy psychologist of being insane and is put on trial, everyone's faith is put to the test as young and old alike face the age-old question: Do you believe in Santa Claus?

New Displays at the Thomaston Library

Three new displays have been unveiled at the Thomaston Public Library in the last few weeks. A display of Thomaston school artifacts on loan from the Thomaston Historical Society is currently on display in the entry corridor of the library. The artifacts will remain on display through the winter.

An artwork display featuring photography by Neil Shively has been installed in the library's lower level. Neil's photography display features photos from the area as well as Ireland, Africa, and other parts of the United States.

And in the main wing of the library, a doll collection owned by Friend of the Library Lysbeth Andrews, along with some loans from Corinne Darby, will be on display through December. The dolls are all handmade fisherman and mermaid dolls, created and sold by the Port Clyde Baptist Church Sewing Circle as part of their annual fundraiser. Andrews has been collecting the dolls for several years, and Darby is a member of the sewing circle.

Our Hospitality - In many ways a companion piece to his 1926 classic "The General", Our Hospitality stars Keaton as a New York man who returns to his southern antebellum homeland to find himself embroiled in a longstanding fued between his family and that of the woman he loves. The sequence in which Buster travels southward by rinky-dink locomotive is a most sublime example of the director's craft that represents but a tiny portion of the extrardinary talent that characterizes the art of Buster Keaton.

Sherlock Jr. - Perhaps no other film offers as exciting a roller coaster ride through the golden age of comedy than Buster Keaton's "Sherlock Jr." Dramatizing the uproarious explots of a meek theatre projectionist turned amateur sleuth, the film blends the knockout physical comedy normally associated with slapstick, with more subtly-crafted moments of humor.

Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. no one knows that better than Janet Leigh, the ill-fated heroine who had a less than pleasant experience in the now notorious "shower scene". Vera Miles, Martin Balsam, John Gavin, and John McIntire co-star in Hitchcock's most compelling and terrifying film. Bernard Herrmann provided the classic soundtrack.

Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Spellbound's most memorable scene is the powerful dream sequence, created by the extraordinary 20th century Spanish artist Salvadore Dali.

Pearl Chavez (Jennifer Jones), a sultry half-breed orphan, is taken in by distant relative Laura Belle McCanles (Lillian Gish), whose husband (Lionel Barrymore) is a rich Texas cattle baron. The quintessential home-wrecker, Pearl is attracted to the two McCanles sons -- wild he-man Lewt (Gregory Peck) and educated, methodical Jesse (Joseph Cotten). The scene is set for a battle royale that pits brother against brother and a final confrontation between Lewt and Pearl.

Winner of 8 Oscars, director Elia Kazan's classic morality tale stars Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a has-been boxer who experiences a crisis of conscience while working for mob controlled union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). Terry turns a blind eye when Friendly's thugs kill a fellow dockworker to keep him from testifying in a corruption case, but he has second thoughts when the victim's sister (Eva Marie Saint) urges him to take a stand. Rod Steiger plays Terry's brother, also involved with the mob. Karl Malden plays a priest who tries to guide Terry.

Thomaston Public Library is very pleased to announce that we have received a large display case from the W. Tom and Bonnie Sawyer Library at Husson College. The new display case will be one of three main areas for community people to show off their collections, artwork, crafts or other items as part of the library's new Community Displays program. The two finally face off when Cal confronts his dad with the truth about his allegedly dead mother, played by Jo Van Fleet. Julie Harris and Burl Ives co-star.

On Wednesday, Aug. 4, Friends of the Thomaston Public Library's Artists and Authors Among Us lecture series will continue with photographer Joyce Tenneson. The one-hour presentation will begin 7 p.m. in the Academy Building gym.

Tenneson will show slides from her award-winning book "Intimacy: The Sensual Essence of Flowers." During the lecture, she will show flowers she has photographed from around the world.

Tenneson is among the most respected photographers of our time and has been described critically as one of America's most interesting portrayers of the human character. Her work has appeared on countless covers for magazines such as Time, Life, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, Premiere, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine.

The program includes time for questions, and a small reception will be held. The series is are free to the public, but donations to the library are greatly appreciated.

Upcoming presenters include author Sandy Oliver, Aug. 18; artist Elizabeth Greenburg, Sept. 8; and artist Eric Hopkins, Sept. 15. For more information, contact the library at 354-2453.

Leigh, Hunter and Karl Malden all took home Oscars for their work in this sizzling adaptation of Tennessee Williams' classic rumination on carnal attraction and faded gentility.

Director Woody Allen's Oscar-nominated comedy set in 1940s Brooklyn draws heavily on his youth - at a time when radio was king. Through vignettes woven together by music from the era, the film focuses on young Joe (Seth Green) and his houseful of relatives. His father (Michael Tucker) craves news from Europe, his aunt (Dianne Wiest) is obsessed with marriage and his mother (Julie Kavner) is appalled that Joe has bought a secret decoder ring.
