Death-obsessed teen Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is being hassled by his domineering mother (Vivian Pickles) to play the dating game, but he'd much rather attend funerals, which is where he meets the feisty Maude (Ruth Gordon), a geriatric widow who's high on life. The seemingly mismatched pair forms a bond that turns into a highly unconventional --but ultimately satisfying--romance in this comical cult favorite from director Hal Ashby.

In Tennessee Williams's tale of sexual repression set in 1937 New Orleans, rich widow Mrs. Venable (Katharine Hepburn) is distraught over the death of her son Sebastian during his vacation to Europe, where the two had traveled together every summer. This time, Sebastian had taken his cousin Catherine (Elizabeth Taylor), who appeared to go mad the day sebastian died. Dr. Cukrowicz (Montgomery Clift) is called in to assess her mental state, and at Mrs. Venable's urging, perform a lobotomy on Catherine . . .

But as he gets to know Julia's headstrong sister (Katharine Hepburn), he realizes she is the one for him. George Cukor directs this 1938 comedy.

Sharing the retreat are acerbic widow Mrs. Fisher (Oscar nominee Joan Plowright) and socialite Caroline (Polly Walker). The four spend a month savoring new-found freedom and the opportunity for self-discovery. Alfred Molina co-stars in this tale of 1920s English manners.

An aging actress (Katherine Hepburn) is being sued for breach of promise, and so she hires as her lawyer her former lover. He is still in love with her, yet she is unaware of it. The only option she has to save her assets is to ruin her reputation and have this man do it for her. Katherine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier shine in this George Cukor classic.

But when the child divulges a dreaded secret, Wang faces a choice between filial love and societal tradition.

In 1979, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern was invited to perform concerts in China and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music - - an extraordinary cultural exchange chronicled in this classic documentary.

Luise Rainer took home her second consecutive Best Actress Oscar for her heartfelt portrayal of O-Lan, the long-suffering spouse of Chinese dirt farmer Wang Lung (Paul Muni) in this film based on Pearl S. Buck's epic tome. The lyrical tale chronicles the couple's changing fortunes as they survive famine and revolution, only to be tested again by avarice, lust, and Mother Nature. Karl Freunk picked up an Academy Award for his cinematography.

Filmed on location in Eastern europe, this beloved musical based on Sholem Aleichem's stories was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three. Director norman Jewison chronicles the trials of Jewish peasant Tevye the milkman (Israeli actor Topol), humble father of three strong-willed daughters and husband to oft-objecting wife, Golde (Norma Crane) in pre-revolutionary Russia. Violinist Isaac Stern provides the haunting music of the fiddler.

A British scribe (Micheal York) and his comrades -- including a flamboyant American nightclub entertainter named Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) -- chronicle the debauchery and turbulence of prewar Berlin in director Bob Fosse's musical adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's Berlin stories. Existing in a morally ambiguous void, the characters doggedly maintain their facades as the world outside the cabaret gears for war.

When Hollywood attempts the transition from silent films to talkies, a matinee idol (Kelly) hopes to make the cut. But he's hampered by a silent-movie queen (Jean Hagen) witha voice like fingernails on a blackboard.

But Gigi's courtesan grandmother is aghast: No one in the family has ever considered something as plebian as matrimony. No one is born to be a failure. No one is poor who has friends. Simple thoughts that were an inspiration for one of the richest, most uplifting, most beloved American films ever made. Frank Capra's classic tale of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) and his Christmas Eve visit with a guardian angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. After 60 years it remains as powerful and moving as the day it was made.

The holiday season in in full swing when a cultured gentleman with twinkling eyes, ample belly and a snowy beard (Edmund Gwen) is hired as Macy's Santa Claus. He claims his name is Kris Kringle and soon fills everyone with the Christmas spirit - except for his boss, Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) who is raising her daughter (Natalie Wood) to not believe in Santa. But, when Kringle is accused by the department store's crazy psychologist of being insane and is put on trial, everyone's faith is put to the test as young and old alike face the age-old question: Do you believe in Santa Claus?

Rejected by the Confederate Army as unfit and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle (Marion Mack), Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) sets out to single-handedly win the war with his cherished locomotive in this classic silent action-comedy. When Northern spies steal his train, the intrepid Confederate takes on the entire Union army to get it back. Keaton's extremely physical performance features a series of acrobatic stunts. Of special interest is the amazing fact that Keaton himself performed the dangerous and hair-raising stunts numerous times on real moving trains.

Chaplin's moving, eloquent masterpiece! One of Chaplin's most highly acclaimed films, City Lights is both a classic and a personal statement in which the master of pantomime proves the eloquence of silence. Combining wonderful comedy and evocative drama, the little tramp falls in love with a beautiful, blind flower girl. By comic happenstance, she believes he is wealthy and he, in turn, sets out to raise the money for an eye operation.

Because she has fallen in love with Devlin, she agrees - but as she gets more involved she realizes she's putting her life in danger. Pearl Chavez (Jennifer Jones), a sultry half-breed orphan, is taken in by distant relative Laura Belle McCanles (Lillian Gish), whose husband (Lionel Barrymore) is a rich Texas cattle baron. The quintessential home-wrecker, Pearl is attracted to the two McCanles sons -- wild he-man Lewt (Gregory Peck) and educated, methodical Jesse (Joseph Cotten). The scene is set for a battle royale that pits brother against brother and a final confrontation between Lewt and Pearl.
