The Bravados

Once-upstanding rancher Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) is relentless as he tracks the four men (Lee Van Cleef, Albert Salmi, Stephen Boyd and Henry Silva) who raped and murdered his wife. Entering a town, he discovers the men have been captured and will be hanged the next day. But the gang escapes with a hostage , and Douglas (with a posse in tow) must trail them again. Joan Collins co-stars. Henry King directs.

My Darling Clementine

With help from Doc Holliday (Victor Mature), with whom he maintains a tepid friendship, Earp's pursuit ultimately involves the history-making confrontation at the OK Corral.

A classic study in star charisma and pitch-perfect casting, The African Queen was nominated for four Oscars (for actress, actor, director and original screenplay), with Bogart winning a Best Actor statuette.

Wrapped in a classic tale of adventure, this Academy Award winner by John Huston follows a trio of gold prospectors who set out to strike it rich and agree to split the take...until paranoia and greed consumes one of them. Delivering superb performances as the three miners are Humphrey Bogart, Tim Hold and Walter Huston, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar while son John scored statuettes for his direction and screenplay.

Frank Capra's inverted take on A Christmas Carol stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a good man who's spent a lifetime giving up on his dreams in order to keep life in his small town humming. When a guardian angel named Clarence finds a despondent George poised to jump off a bridge, he shows George what life would've been like had he never been born. This classic is a holiday favorite.

Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory

*Due to a scheduling conflict, the Friends of the Thomaston Library are moving their Friday Night Film Night to St. John's Church, on this date only.

In this award-winning adaptation of an autobiographical story by Truman Capote, Eric Lloyd plays Buddy, who at age 7 is dumped by his parents at the home of some elderly spinster relations. Luckily for Buddy, he becomes fast friends with one of them, embarking on a series of adventures in the Depression-era rural South. Patty Duke and Piper Laurie co-star in this charmingly nostalgic tale.

When Santa falls down drunk in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, reluctant Macy's supervisor Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) offers the job to a bearded Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) purporting to be the real Santa! During the Christmas season, he shares a flat with Doris's neighbor (John Payne), who has eyes for Doris. Kris hopes to unite the two while winning over Doris's skeptical 6-year-old daughter (Natalie Wood).

Yves Robert directs this film based on the humorous best-selling memoirs of French novelist and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, which highlights the alluring, magical country life of turn-of-the-century Provence. Young Marcel's mother longs for the tranquility of Bastide Neuve after spending a summer there and encourages her family to make the nine-mile trek on foot. They shorten the journey by cutting across a private estate, which lands them in trouble. Charming and suitable for the whole family.

A "richly textured" tale of an elderly woman's journey home, "Trip to Bountiful" stars Geraldine Page in "the Performance of a lifetime" that won her an Academy Award. Carrie Watts (Page) is an elderly woman with a weak heart - but strong determination. Trapped in a tiny apartment under the care of her cowardly son and his srewish wife, Carrie is determined to escape and return to her girlhood home to make peace with her past.

Romantic drama combines humor and starpower with the lavish spectacle of the 1906 earthquake. This Academy Award-winning extravaganza remains "one of the greatest action sequences in the history of the cinema, rivalling the chariot race in both Ben-Hurs". Clark Gable plays rakish Barbary Coast kingpin Blackie Norton. Jeanette MacDonald portrays a singer torn by her love for Blackie and her need to succeed in opera. Earning the first of nine career Oscar nominations, Spencer Tracy is a priest who supplements spiritual advice with a mean right hook.

When a guardian angel named Clarence finds a despondent George poised to jump off a bridge, he shows George what life would've been like if he had never been born. Its a Wonderful Life was nominated for five Oscars, and the film was placed number one on the list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Artists Among Us: Charles DuBack

Artist Charles DuBack

August 5th, 6:30 p.m.

Room 208, Thomaston Academy Building

Artist Charles DuBack of Tenants Harbor will give a slide talk about his work at the Thomaston Public Library on Wednesday August 5  at 6:30 PM. The talk will take place in Room 208 of the Academy building at 60 Main Street. The talk is part of the third Friends of the Library series, Artists Among Us. 

Throughout his career, DuBack has moved from representational work to an abstract form, though he does not identify his work as abstract.  Holland Cotter, art critic for the New York Times, wrote "Charles DuBack's intention is to produce an effect of work unfinished and open-ended-the effect of a painting always in the process of painting itself."

DuBack will have a solo exhibition this fall at the Portland Museum of Art.

Following the August 5th presentation there will be a catered reception by Konscious Kitchen.

The Series, Artist Among Us,  is free to the public but donations to the library will be greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact the library

Julie Harris reprises her Tony Award-winning Broadway role as 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson in this one woman interpretation of the great literary figure's life. Against the backdrop of Dickinson's 19th century Amherst, Mass., home, Harris declaims from the reclusive poet's poems, letters and diaries to offer a delicate portrait of the artist as both a real human being and long-suffering genius.

Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee shine in this film version of Lorraine Hansberry's play about an inner-city black family. Poitier plays Walter Lee Younger, a chauffeur with a wife (Dee) and family to support. WHen a financial windfall puts Younger's dream of starting his own business within reach the family is plunged into conflict with one another and with the intolerant world around them.

Friends of the Thomaston Library meeting

The Friends of the Thomaston Library will hold their next meeting on Monday, February 23rd.  The meeting was pushed back to the third Monday of the month, as Friends president Davene Fahy is unavailable until then. 

During the meeting the Friends will discuss their finances, the 211 Bookshop, and vote on whether or not to fund upcoming library programs and projects.  All are invited to attend.
