In the thick of a midlife crisis, television writer Isaac Davis (Woody Allen) finds himself torn between the sweet but far too young Tracy (Maril Hemingway, who received an Oscar nod for the role) and his best friend's mistress, Mary (Diane Keaton). Shot in black and whit and in wide-screen format - both firsts for director Allen - this film is as much a paean to the city he calls home as it is a tale of Davis's romantic foibles.

Mario Lanza stars in this Oscar-winning fictionalized account of Italian tenor Enrico Caruso's journey from obscurity in Naples to his celebrated operatic career at the Met in New York. Directed by Richard Thorpe and featuring a magnificent score, this musical extravaganza also stars Ann Blyth, Dorothy Kirsten, Richard Hageman, Carl Benton Reid, Eduard Franz and Jarmila Novotna. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

Bogus "preacher" Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) learns that cellmate Ben Harper (Peter Graves) has stashed a passel of stolen loot on his property. After the demented Powell is released, he charms Ben's widow (Shelly Winters) into getting hitched, and in time, only Ben's kids stand between Powell and the money. As he stalks them relentlessly, they seek refuge with the indomitable Rachel Cooper (Lillian Gish), setting the stage for an inexorable battle of wills.

The Petrified Forest
starring Humphrey Bogart, Leslie Howard, and Bette Davis

Noted for Humphrey Bogart's breakout performance, this classic nail biter teems with desperate characters in dangerous situations. When down and out brit Alan (Howard) wanders into a remote diner, he charms the owner's daughter (Davis) who dreams of living in Paris. Too unstable for love, Alan departs, but soon finds himself back at the diner, held prisoner - along with several others - by a desperado (Bogart).

One of literature's most popular sleuths returns in this faithful adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic mystery. When an antisocial villager unexpectedly drops dead, most assume he suffered a heart attack -- everyone, that is, except Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford). By scrutinizing each of the people who could have benefited from the victim's passing, she follows her instincts to reopen what seemed to be an open-and-shut case.

MURDER AT THE GALLUP was produced in 1983 and runs 81 minutes. The film, with refreshments provided, is free to the public but donations to the Friends of the Library will be appreciated.

One of Alec Guinness's strangest British comedies, this Oscar-nominated film is well worth your time. An eccentric artist, just released from jail, somehow convinces rich "clients" to pay him for artwork they didn't order. A curious mixture of the usual British brand of subtle comedy with a pinch of black comedy thrown in, the Horse's Mouth will tickle your funny bone with its clever writing.

Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland reunite in this vibrant musical directed by Busby Berkeley.  Thwarted in their attempts to break into the big time, showbiz wannabes Tommy Williams (Rooney) and Penny Morris (Garland) decide to stage their own Broadway production.  Songs include "(I Like New York in June) How About You: and a selection of send-ups of performances by musical sensations -- including Rooney's hilarious Carmen Miranda imitation.

Audrey Hepburn (in an Oscar-winning performance) stars as European princess who goes AWOL in Rome and is soon taken under the wing of tabloid journalist Gregory Peck and his photographer sidekick Eddie Albert. She thinks the boys don't suspect who she really is . . . but they're clued in and sense a sensational story if they can just keep Audrey's handlers from retrieving her too soon. The essence of 1950s chic.

The Motorcycle Diaries

This film tells the incredible true story of a 23-year-old medical student from Argentina, Che Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal), who motorcycled across South America with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) in 1951-52. The trek became a personal odyssey that ultimately crystallized the young man's budding revolutionary beliefs. Walter Salles' films is based on Che's own diaries of the trip.
